Meet Our Residents

The first time we drove through Colleton River Plantation, we could feel ourselves relax. The peaceful setting, closeness to nature, abundant wildlife, tidal marshes and salt water rivers, beautifully designed clubhouse, outstanding golf courses, and a well equipped fitness center made our decision to move here an easy one. The added bonus was meeting so many warm, thoughtful, and supportive members and employees who care about each other and are committed to making Colleton River a very desirable place to live. We have never regretted our decision to build a home in this exceptional community.

After looking for five years for the perfect place to retire and flee Michigan snow, we chose Colleton River Plantation and moved and built here in 1995. Little did we know then that the wonderful golf courses, great tennis facilities along with the secluded Lowcountry properties on the Colleton River would not be the primary reasons we love it so much today. Now we realize that our great new and interesting friendships and the friendly atmosphere of the Colleton River family make our life here so special.

Besides all of the great amenities and the joy of disagreeing over which Top 100 course you prefer, the greatest asset of Colleton River is the Membership.

Every day when I wake up and look out to see the sun rise over the marsh or when I am simply enjoying another aspect of this marvelous place, I thank God that I was lucky enough to be able to be here.

Nan and I and our girls had been visiting the Hilton Head area since 1982, the year Nan's parents retired and moved to Hilton Head Plantation. The now adult children still talk about the beach, crabbing in Skull Creek and the evenings with Gregg Russell under the oak tree in Harbourtown. As we neared retirement, we travelled the east coast from Maryland to Florida looking at places to spend our "golden years." There are many wonderful communities along the coast, but the allure of this area kept calling us back. Nan had two dream wishes for our future home - a marsh view and some live oaks. Colleton River Plantation's lush properties had both. The view from our lot on Hampton Lane looks through the live oaks over the marsh and Port Royal Sound. We also learned that Colleton River Plantation has a larger than average preserved space giving the community an open and uncrowded feeling, something that is more obvious when one visits other plantations. We are building now and will soon move into our new home. Our architect was born and raised in the Lowcountry and I recently asked him the local opinion of Colleton River Plantation. "That's easy," he said. "It's the crown jewel."

We have belonged to Colleton River Plantation Club since 1993. It was love at first sight for us and we couldn't wait to build our new home away from home.

Because of family and business ties in Cincinnati we were unable to live at Colleton River full time. They say "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and that certainly applied to us. Each visit was preceded by eager anticipation and we were never disappointed.

While we love the two outstanding golf courses and the fantastic new clubhouse, most of our anticipation has centered around seeing the wonderful friends we have made during the past fourteen years.

What really makes Colleton River so great? That's easy........IT'S THE PEOPLE.
